It is a mystery that has existed since the dawn of time. The remnants of primordial light; compressed into a solitary gem and expelled with man from paradise as punishment for the original sin. It has been possessed by some of the greatest men throughout history, all of whom have reveled in its power. But, that is only part of its story.
The past five years have been rough for Gabriel Patrick; recently fired from his academic position at the university, and still reeling at being dumped by the true love of his life. And, dumped not just for any other man, but Gabe's personal and professional mentor--the renowned art historian, Dr. Rudolph Zeffner.
But now, Rudy has been murdered and his ex Kevin has shown up unexpectedly, bringing with him a story too outlandish to believe. But, what seems so impossible at first, reveals itself through a series of clues left by Rudy that Gabe and Kevin must now follow. Soon they are consumed by a Transatlantic quest for one of mankind's greatest treasures. But, other factions are also seeking this incredible object, and have already proven that they will kill to possess it. Can Gabe and Kevin find the relic and fulfill the final wishes of the man they both loved, or will they fall to his same fate?

If you're a Dan Brown or Steve Berry fan - you'll love Chasing the Light. Zarley develops his characters, their backgrounds and the cities exquisitely so that you feel as if you really know Gabe, Kevin, and Rudy. Chasing the Light also reminds me of the movie, National Treasure, with a bit more realistic bend. One of the biggest complaints I've heard about books and movies like the DaVinci Code and National Treasure is that you couldn't expect the average person to make the leaps and assumptions required to solve the puzzles. Light changes that - you are able to see why it takes a team to solve the puzzles, and money. Zarley doesn't leave those details out, so the book has a more believable plot.Unlike most of the treasure-hunting books I've read, the relationship dynamics in the book are all M/M or F/F - a refreshing shift from the typical 'formula' for this genre.
Chasing the Light is well-researched - the author obviously knows the cities that he is writing about, and has studied the religious history of artifacts that's required in books in the DaVinci Code genre.
I think that readers will be surprised by the ending. (I was!) While the book did not end as I had expected, I heard that there is already a sequel in the works that I look forward to reading.

Chasing the Light edition by Joel Zarley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This genre is not usually what I like to read, but since it was described as similar to the style of The DaVinci Code, which I enjoyed, I thought I would take a chance.
I enjoyed the way that fact was intertwined with fiction. It made me want to visit the places mentioned in the book and follow the trail the two main characters, Gabe and Kevin, followed. It would be fun to see how much was fact and how much was fiction.
The book tastefully incorporated a little bit of romance into the story without letting it overwhelm the plot.
I felt the author dealt with sensitive subject matter in a way that was not oppressive in any way.
Overall, the book was entertaining and I look forward to his next book.
